Blended / Integrative Learning & Training

This intensive course provides the core skill sets, strategies, and models necessary for the practice of mediation. Participants are guided through a stage process of mediation and how these stages apply to actual case studies of mediation. Participants are offered an overview of the nature of conflict and differing styles of human interaction and are asked to explore their unique style of engaging or avoiding conflict and how this might affect their role as a mediator.

The program covers the highest professional standards and ethics of this growing profession. Participants learn core people skills such as reflective listening, impartiality, reframing, effective communication, and the handling of critical moments.

APC takes pride in providing the most intensive, comprehensive, and effective mediator certification training available anywhere — Learners may expect to work hard, but will complete the training prepared to function successfully as professional mediators, whether internally within their employing organizations, or externally with clients.


Programme Outlines

This Advanced Professional Certification in Mediation has 10 comprehensive topics, which provide "hands on" instruction on the following topics:  

  1. Purpose and Benefits of Mediation

In this lesson, you will learn: the purpose and benefits of mediation; your role as a mediator; and what it takes to become an effective mediator.

  1. The Formal Mediation Process

In this lesson, you will learn: the purpose of the mediator s opening statement; why parties should sign an agreement to mediate before mediation begins; how to define the parties' dispute in a way that it can be resolved; how to establish rapport with the parties; how to keep them focused on the goal of mediation; how to help them develop options for resolving their dispute; and how to get them ready to negotiate.

  1. Applied Communication Information and Gathering/Relationship Skills

As a mediator, you need to have both communication skills - which you will learn in this lesson, and negotiation skills which you will learn in the next lesson. Understand the fundamental information/data distinctions of qualitative vs. quantitative, basic vs. applied, and traditional vs. action research.

  1. Practical Negotiation Strategies

In this lesson, you will learn: how the negotiation process works; and how parties behave in negotiation. It is important for the participants to consider different levels of resolutions for different levels of customers in the process.

  1. Functional Conflict Management

Participants will be able to define the history of conflict resolution and understand the basic definitions of processes such as the negotiation, mediation, arbitration, litigation and other alternative means for resolving disputes. Participants will gain the knowledge of conflict management skills and best practices.

  1. Physical Scenario Management and Process Risk Fundamentals

Participants will practice and develop practical, sustainable and successful strategies, based on customized future management tools and methods. The scenario management is to help participants develop a comprehensive strategic management assessment such as external analysis, internal assessment, strategic direction, strategic plans, implementation, and performance evaluation. The identification of possible risks and who and what may be affected by them is necessary before risk reduction plans can be made.

  1. Defined Problem Solving and Decision Making

Participants will learn to have the ability to build a working relationship and a constructive process with the parties. Participants will also have the ability to facilitate problem solving between the parties. The decision will be made based on the mutual benefit of the clients and parties involved.

  1. Legal Consideration and implications of Mediation

Participants will be able to construct durable agreements, which are procedurally, substantively and psychologically mutually satisfactory to disputants.

  1. Professional Ethics, Moral Implication of mediation, and Supporting Legal Documents

Participants will have the knowledge of standards of practice and how ethical issues are resolved. Participants will understand concepts of mediator influence and neutrality.

  1. Mediation Specialties: family, labor, insurance, medical, business, banking…

Project/Research: customized cases

Participants will also be able to apply practical skills, strategies and techniques necessary for effective specialties mediation practice. Participants will gain the necessary skills to become effective and professional mediators. Participants will gain the ability to contract their mediation services.

On completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

1. Apply advanced dispute resolution skills to conflict with situations.

4. Analyze the differences between four of the most common mediation approaches.

7. Increase self-awareness regarding approach and reaction to conflict.


8. Understand the significance of power, personality and culture in mediation.


9. Understand and apply skills for working through the impasse in mediation.


10. Demonstrate the ability to identify hidden interests in conflict.


11. Demonstrate the ability to facilitate the resolution of conflict and reach agreement.


12. Demonstrate effective communication and relationship skills in mediation.


13. Articulate and apply ethical standards and professional ethics for practice.


14. Demonstrate a stance of neutrality and impartiality in mediation.

Assessment and Awards

At the end of each course, participants are required to submit assignments and projects, have at least 70% attendance in each module, and pass an examination with multiple choice questions and/or role play cases will lead to the professional designation in APCM (Executive Certificate in Mediation) award by the APC. A certificate will be issued to a participant who passes all courses and examination respectively. APC will issue a Certificate of Completion to participants who meet the above requirements. Candidates who have achieved the B grade or above in each module at the designated academic or training institutes will recommend to be a APCM. Candidates also need to pay the fees for certification.

Recognition & Further Path for Professional Qualifications

A Participant satisfies the professional and educational requirement for APCM designation. The participant plus 3 years of management experience will lead to full certification and use of APCM as designation. Participants with lesser experience will be admitted as Associate Members and then progress to Full Members when the 3-year experience is achieved. Fellow membership will be opened to all qualified professionals or by invitation. The certified professional mediator has to achieve continuing professional development (CPD) / education programmes (20 hours) as recognized by the APC's panel membership requirement. This needs to be done before scheduling your recertification simulation. To maintain the highest credibility and quality of APCM status and for the benefits of APCMs' members, they have to go through the re-certification process ( on-line MC test) after three years from their date of granting the designation. The recertification process is the same every three years.

Admission Requirements:

Applicant should fulfill either one of the following:

- Be at age of 21 or above with three year work experience

- Located in Hong Kong, China, other countries and new immigrants

- Hold a post-secondary qualification, e.g. professional certificate or diploma, from a recognized tertiary institution or technical institute, or equivalent, or from mainland China.

- Applicants who do not meet the criteria* but show strong determination to join the Programme may be exceptionally admitted. They will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may be required to do a special personal assessment to help them develop their competency.

Accreditation and Recognition:

Graduates meet the requirements for admission to membership of the Executive Certificate in Mediation (APCM). For those who wish to apply for exemption from professional qualification, similar and/or equivalent qualification and experience will be considered. We also do not feel that a single course every two years satisfies the educational growth and professional development requirements. The lifelong learning process should be highly self motivated and continuous. Educational sources and professional development are numerous such as books, magazines, the internet, conferences, seminars, forum, discussion groups, and other formal university and/or Academy courses or class. Our Academy is a self-regulated and recognized institution, and your certificate/diploma is certification of your achievement of knowledge in the mediation training program from which you have graduated. However it is up to the individual organization or employer to determine acceptance of certification from the Academy. Please download the application for CPM form:

- APC Membership Registration and Affiliate Membership fee: HK$2,000 (one-off joining fee);

- Only registered candidates (designated course providers of APC) may participate in the assessment process and assessment fee is at: HK$500;

- Graduates of the Professional Diploma in Mediation;

- For those whom have the requisite qualification, the certification or recertification fee is at HK$4000 including the role play assessment and/or mini project(s).
